After five years in the making, Kartemquin's On Beauty is gearing up for an exciting world premiere in our hometown of Chicago as part of the Chicago International Film Festival. Please join us and invite your friends for the maiden screening on Saturday, October 18th at 1:15pm at the AMC River East 21 theater. Get tickets. Emmy-nominated director Joanna Rudnick (In the Family), photographer Rick Guidotti and other special guests will participate in a post-screening panel to discuss the film, Rick’s work, and the importance and challenges of changing the mainstream definition of beauty. On Beauty is a story about recognizing and appreciating the beauty of difference. The film follows fashion photographer Rick Guidotti, who left the fashion world when he grew frustrated with having to work within the restrictive parameters of the industry’s standard of beauty. After a chance encounter with a young woman who had the genetic condition albinism, Rick re-focused his lens on those too often relegated to the shadows to change the way we see and experience beauty. At the center of On Beauty are two of Rick's photo subjects - Sarah and Jayne. Sarah lives in upstate New York and left public school for homeschooling after being bullied so harshly for the Sturge-Weber birthmark on her face and brain. Jayne lives in Eastern Africa where witch doctors hunt people with albinism to sell their body parts and the society is blind to their unique health and safety needs. Rick, Sarah, Jayne and the other vibrant people highlighted in On Beauty prove that people with genetic conditions are more than what's in medical textbooks and beauty is more than what's in magazines. We are excited to use the Chicago premiere as a springboard into a busy fall full of festivals, special screenings, and more outreach campaigns. The Chicago International Film Festival runs October 9-23, 2014 at the AMC River East, 322 E. Illinois St. See the full line-up of films and get more information.
