In memoriam: Charles Benton

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Charles Benton, a close friend of Kartemquin and a tireless, life-long advocate for public media and democracy. According to the Benton Foundation, Charles passed away yesterday at his home in Evanston at the age of 84. Learn more at Benton.org. We will fondly remember Charles as the educational distributor for Hoop Dreams upon its original release, and for the many other occasions since then in which we have worked together or been grateful to receive his support and council. We share Charles's deep commitment to using communications and media as a tool for solving problems, which he exemplified in his long career in the media education and entertainment businesses as President or Chairman of Encyclopaedia Britannica Education Corporation, Films Incorporated, Public Media Inc., Lionheart Television International, and Home Vision Entertainment. Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to his family, especially his daughter, and our current Board Chair, Adrianne Furniss. (Photo: Charles Benton and Kartemquin's Gordon Quinn at our 2013 Gala).
