The 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards announced the nominees of its 36th annual awards ceremony. Steve James' and Zak Piper's monumental 5-part series City So Real scored a nomination for Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series. The fascinating and complex portrait of contemporary Chicago delivers a deep, multifaceted look into the soul of a quintessentially American city, set against the backdrop of its history-making 2019 mayoral election, and the tumultuous 2020 summer of COVID-19 and social upheaval following the death of George Floyd.
Spirit Award winners are voted on exclusively by Film Independent Members. This year, join by February 11 to receive awards screeners and full Spirit Award Member benefits.
The Spirit Awards are set to air Thursday, April 22 at 10:00 pm ET and 7:00 pm PT exclusively on IFC and AMC+ — a temporary break from the show’s usual spot as a live daytime event the day before the Oscars. The full list of nominees in the category is below.
