Passion River Films have acquired the DVD and VOD rights to Kartemquin's American Arab. A specialist independent film distributor to major platforms such as iTunes, Hulu and Netflix, Passion River will announce a consumer release date for American Arab in late 2014. Director Usama Alshaibi's story of Arab identity in post-9/11 America world premiered at IDFA 2013 and then played Big Sky 2014 in the US. It has since then gone on a run of acclaimed US and international festival appearances. In July it will screen at the Maine Film Festival, the Revolution Film Festival in Perth, Australia, and the Indy Film Festival. See the film's events page for more details. Early reviews describe the film as a "a potent discussion starter... a universal story about immigrants’ struggles to assimilate and seek the often elusive promise of the American dream," (ALA Booklist) and "in the great tradition of American personal documentary film... Alshaibi uses the camera as a tool to dig for answers about identity, art and filmmaking that are often overlooked." (Documentary.org). Make sure to follow American Arab on Facebook, or click here to request a screening near you. The film is also available for distribution to educational institutions via The Cinema Guild.
