Almost There will screen throughout the South next week on the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers, following the film's award-winning worldwide festival run and US theatrical and VOD release. The film, the story of filmmakers Aaron Wickenden and Dan Rybicky’s simultaneously compassionate, tumultuous, complex and hilarious relationship with reclusive elderly “outsider” artist Peter Anton, will start touring with Southern Circuit on February 16th. Skokie, Illinois poster artist Jay Ryan created the one of a kind promotional poster (pictured) which will be used for the film’s run with Southern Circuit. Ryan, founder of the print shop The Bird Machine, utilized a work by Anton entitled Cat Chart as inspiration for his custom-designed poster. The poster can be purchased here. To see more of Ryan’s magnificent work, visit his website. The Southern Circuit Tour has brought over 300 of the best independent films to more than 100 communities across the Southern United States. Through allowing audiences to gather to watch these films and engage with filmmakers in post-screening discussions, the tour works to transform watching independent films from a solitary experience into a communal one. The tour's full schedule can be found here. In a new review ahead of the tour, Yes! Weekly's Mark Burger writes that the film "offers a vivid portrait of its subject, artist Peter Anton... Almost There, which took eight years from inception to completion, is not an easy film to shake." Burger also interviewed Wickenden and Rybicky, in which they discuss the ethical complexities the film shows, stating: "“Like many documentary filmmakers, our relationship with our subject was complicated. Our role was constantly shifting, as were our emotions about Peter and the situation he was in. Unlike many documentary filmmakers, and for better and/or worse, we kept some of those complex negotiations in the story instead of cutting them out.” See Almost There during the Southern Circuit Tour on the following dates: February 16, 2016 at the Carolina Theatre of Greensboro, Greensboro, NC February 17, 2016 at the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans, LA February 18, 2016 at the Challenger Learning Center, Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL February 19, 2016 at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, Cutler Bay, FL In March, Kartemquin's The Trials of Muhammad Ali will also be on the Southern Circuit tour, with director Bill Siegel visiting these same venues March 14-18.
