The International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) begins this week, and Kartemquin is honored to have a total of eighteen screenings of seven different films at the prestigious Dutch festival, the world's largest documentary-specific event. A number of these screenings are already sold out
IDFA runs from November 16th-27th. Kartemquin filmmakers Steve James, Gordon Quinn and Zak Piper will all be attending. Steve James will not only be presenting the Dutch premiere of his new film The Interrupters, but will be this year's "guest of honor," sharing a retrospective of all his documentary works, as well as presenting his own "documentary top 10" of his favorite films.
Gordon Quinn and Bob Hercules' A Good Man will also show at the festival in its Dutch premiere, screening four times in total.
Among Steve James' "top 10" list is Kartemquin's Gordon Quinn/Jerry Blumenthal co-directed Golub: Late Works Are the Catastrophes, a 2004 extension of Golub, which premiered at the very first IDFA back in 1988. IDFA has also previously shown Hoop Dreams, Stevie, The New Americans and At the Death House Door, all screening twice as part of the Steve James retrospective, which also includes the Dutch premiere of No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson.
Read more about the Steve James retrospective at IDFA in this interview with Variety, in which he says "What's not to like about IDFA?" We agree!
