Bermuda's National Security Minister has vowed to implement a CeaseFire-style violence prevention program after watching The Interrupters.
The Royal Gazette reports that after reading that interrupter Cobe Williams would be on the island for the Bermuda Documentary Film Festival, National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief requested a meeting with Cobe and Co-producer Zak Piper.
Mr. Perinchief is reported to have been "inspired and encouraged" to try out the program after seeing the film, which he described as “a heartening and enlightening experience”. Mr. Perinchief also described Cobe as "an icon” who had “lifted his spirits” as to what could be done to tackle gang violence. Cobe and Zak also met with Bermuda's "Assistant Police Commissioner David Mirfield, church and community leaders, and representatives from court services," as well as talking with 600 students at The Berkeley Institute and at CedarBridge Academy schools.
The positive impact of the documentary has been so great that plans to set up another screening in Bermuda are already under way. For details of more screenings, check The Interrupters website. (EDIT 10/27/11: The Bermuda Docs screening has now been confirmed for November 5th, 6pm at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) in Hamilton, Bermuda).
