Kartemquin is deeply saddened by the passing of Art Shay, one the country's most renowned photographers who snapped countless celebrities and pivotal moments of the 20th century. Shay graciously shared his photos of the 1963 Chicago Public Schools Boycott with the filmmaking team of our 2017 film '63 Boycott. The filmmakers of '63 Boycott posted the videos to the film's website, where individuals could identify themselves or other participants as members of the protest. "Art was the premiere photographer in Chicago. We had both filmed the 1963 Chicago Public Schools Boycott, and over the last few years we got to know each other well. Hello NYC! Kartemquin's first New York retrospective will feature 16 films covering each decade of Kartemquin’s semicentennial across two weekends, August 19-28 at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens. Programmed by Eric Hynes, the Museum of the Moving Image’s Associate Curator of Film, the retrospective kicks-off on August 19 with an exclusive screening of the 162 minute Sundance Film Festival cut of The Interrupters (2011). The acclaimed original cut from director Steve James has not been publicly screened in five years since its January 2011 world premiere. James will attend the opening weekend screenings of his films, which includes his classics Hoop Dreams (1994) and Stevie (2002). Continued

To honor and reflect upon the recent passing of the legendary Muhammad Ali over the weekend, Kino Lorber is bringing our award-winning The Trials of Muhammad Ali documentary back to theaters. From Friday, June 10 – Tuesday, June 16, theaters in New York (Film Forum), Oakland (New Parkway), New Haven (Bow Tie), and Ali's home town of Louisville, Kentucky (Village 8), will be showing the film that The Nation critic David Zirin called “The best Muhammad Ali doc I’ve ever seen and – dare I say – I’ve seen ‘em all.” Director Bill Siegel will be attending Muhammad Ali's funeral tomorrow at the Muhammad Ali Center, and select screenings at the Village 8 in Louisville. Like the rest of the world, we at Kartemquin were deeply saddened by the passing of Muhammad Ali. We wanted to take a moment to reflect on a man who meant so much to so many different people. It is easy to try to whittle down a career and life when it comes to these tributes. It would be easy to sum up a man as simply “the greatest,” one of the most significant and celebrated boxers and sporting figures in history. He will always be remembered in photos towering over Sonny Liston, as the gold medal winner, as the three-time heavyweight champion. His legacy and power will remain at the forefront of the conversation. Continued
