Stevie starts New York Steve James season

At IFC Center in New York at 8pm tonight celebrated director Steve James will attend a rare screening of his 2003 Kartemquin documentary Stevie. The event is hosted by the Stranger Than Fiction documentary programming series. Get tickets. Cynthia Fuchs of Pop Matters reviewed Stevie again ahead of the screening, giving the film 9/10 and praising the film's complexity and refusal to shape a judgment for the viewer: "Instead, it raises questions, considers unintended effects as well as good intentions. Full Frame dates announced for A Good Man and The Interrupters

The Full Frame International Documentary Film Festival has announced screening dates and time for Kartemquin's A Good Man and The Interrupters today. A Good Man will have its World Premiere at the festival on Sunday April 17th at 2pm. Co-Directors Gordon Quinn and Bob Hercules will attend, as will the documentary's mesmeric subject, choreographer Bill T. Jones, and other members of the production crew. Sundance to host World Premiere of The Interrupters!

The Interrupters will have its world premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The film, from acclaimed director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) and bestselling author Alex Kotlowitz (There Are No Children Here) will be part of the Documentary Premieres category, which Sundance created this year for “master filmmakers debuting their new docs about big subjects.” The Interrupters is Steve James’ fifth film to screen at Sundance and his sixth documentary to be produced with Kartemquin Films, which will kick off a yearlong celebration of the organization’s forty-fifth anniversary at Sundance. 15 years later, Hoop Dreams is still a hit in Evanston... and Beijing!

An engaged and enthusiastic audience ventured out into the cold to watch Kartemquin's classic 1994 documentary Hoop Dreams in Evanston, IL yesterday. What was most notable about the crowd was the number of families with young children in attendance, clearly showing the continuing legacy of this great film. After the screening finished, the film's stars William Gates and Arthur Agee took part in a lengthy question and answer session, before autographing postcards and posters for the delighted fans, both old and new.
