Globalization, Cambodia & Social Issue Film: Harnessing the power of social media to unite and engage audiences
Premiering in 2013 at the Sundance Film Festival, ‘A River Changes Course’ is a feature documentary that explores the human and environmental impacts of rapid globalization. The film was directed by Kalyanee Mam, herself the product of the post-Khmer Rouge diaspora.
Launching a social action campaign in mid-2013, Kalyanee’s goal is connect audiences, and engage them in a dialogue about sustainability. The film has found a home within the Khmer-American community; by leveraging an enthusiastic Facebook following, the film has inspired screening hosts, donors, and viewers alike.
Using insights from the campaign, we’ll explore and discuss the power of tools like Facebook to unite community, promote independent film, and spread awareness about global issues. We’ll talk to campaign partners and donors, trace how and why they got involved, and what they’re doing to engage a larger audience.
Participants will take away knowledge about how to identify audience, leverage limited resources, and engage followers. We’ll talk about building community – both online and offline – and how to leverage that community to create lasting social change.
