In case you missed a couple of emails, posts, or general shouting from the rooftops, we are turning 50 years old this year. To celebrate our birthday, Kartemquin Films has done a small takeover of venues, event, and newspapers, to raise awareness of this milestone and to give back to both the Chicago and film community at large.

Ahead of our 50th anniversary celebration on June 24th at the Harris Theater Rooftop, we open our archives to the Chicago public with the exhibition “Kartemquin Films 1966-2016: Democracy through Documentary” opening on May 21st and running through August 20th at Expo 72 (72 E. Randolph St, Chicago, IL, 60601).

It is with great sadness that we announce that Kartemquin founding partner Jerry Blumenthal passed away today.
At the core of Kartemquin since our earliest days in the 1960s, Jerry has a credit on our very first film, Home for Life, and was working with us this year to finish projects on the artist Gerda Bernstein, and Murder the Prepositions, about the poet Les Bridges.

Kartemquin and The Black Cinema House will partner on "Chicago: Segregated City", a screening and discussion of three of our classic films about race in Chicago, along with an exclusive sneak preview of 63 Boycott, our in-progress film about the 1963 boycott of Chicago Public Schools by thousands of African American parents and students.

Post-broadcast, the requests to screen A Good Man eveywhere from film festivals to universities, keep coming in. A Good Man is a window into the creative process and, indeed, the creative crisis of one of our nation’s most enduring, provocative artists as he explores what it means to be a good man, to be a free man, to be a citizen. These topics are particularly pertinent during February, which is both Black History Month and the month of Lincoln's birthday.
