Chicago Mayor Emanuel hosts special The Interrupters event for city officials

On Tuesday February 21st at the Chicago Cultural Center, Ameena Matthews told the story of a recent violence interruption – one that ended, as they frequently do, with the participants in her car, whisked away from the scene to give them enough space to regain their cool.  Her car packed full of teenage boys, she hit Lakeshore Drive.  “Is that the ocean?” one of the boys asked.  Because of gang boundaries, these youths had never seen Lake Michigan.

On Tuesday, February 14 from 10-10:30 pm, WTTW’s Chicago Tonight will host a special panel discussion immediately following the U.S. television premiere of The Interrupters. Chicago Sun-Times columnist Carol Marin and Chicago Tonight's Phil Ponce will host the segment, which is produced by Emmy winner Jay Shefsky.


Carol Marin will talk with Ameena Matthews, Eddie Bocanegra, and Cobe Williams about CeaseFire and violence intervention. Then, Phil Ponce talks to former Chicago police superintendent Jody Weis and CeaseFire leader Tio Hardiman about CeaseFire’s relationship with the police. Ponce will also talk to Kartemquin Films producer/director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) and author-turned-producer Alex Kotlowitz (There Are No Children Here) about the making of The Interrupters and about the film’s impact on the community.

Kartemquin Films, PBS Frontline and ITVS invite you to join the filmmakers and stars of The Interrupters for a special live, online "social screening" of the film through ITVS OVEE. The screening begins at 8:30 ET / 7:30 CT.

 

Participating in the screening will be the film's producers Steve James and Alex Kotlowitz, and violence interrupter Cobe Williams. More participants are still to be confirmed.
