Kartemquin representatives will speak on a panel at the 2012 University Film & Video Association Conference
Panel Title: Kartemquin Films: Film Outreach and Advocacy in the Digital Age.
Description: Since 1966, Chicago’s Kartemquin Films (Hoop Dreams) has made media that is inherently social: collaboratively-made activist documentaries that are complimented by pioneering engagement strategies. They will discuss how a mix of tradition and innovation is key to extending the impact of films as they go through festivals, theatrical, broadcast, community/educational screenings and then online/DVD. They will also demo Interrupt Violence, a new transmedia extension of the acclaimed documentary The Interrupters.
Part of Kartemquin's mission is also to advocate for independent media makers, taking on battles in areas such as public access TV, fair use, and the recent successful #PBSNeedsIndies campaign. Jim Morrissette and Gordon Quinn will report back from their recent testimony to the US Copyright Office on another key issue affecting artists, academics and audiences, detailing what you need to know about how changing technology affects your rights under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA).
Presenters:
1:30 - 2:20: Justine Nagan, Patrick Lile
2:20 - 3:15: Gordon Quinn, Jim Morrissette.
