A timely re-broadcast of '63 Boycott from co-founder and Artistic Director Gordon Quinn, captured on unseen 16mm archival footage, will be aired on Local, USA on Monday, July 20th at 8:00 PM CST.

ABOUT THE FILM

On October 22, 1963, more than 250,000 students boycotted the Chicago Public Schools to protest racial segregation. Many marched through the city calling for the resignation of School Superintendent Benjamin Willis, who placed trailers, dubbed ‘Willis Wagons,’ on playgrounds and parking lots of overcrowded black schools rather than let them enroll in nearby white schools.

Combining unseen archival 16mm footage of the march shot by Kartemquin co-founder and Artistic Director Gordon Quinn with the participants’ reflections today, ’63 BOYCOTT connects the forgotten story of one of the largest northern civil rights demonstrations to contemporary issues around race, education, school closings, and youth activism.

The School Project

The School Project is an independent cross-platform media project committed to the idea that a healthy public education system is essential to a vital American democracy. A collaboration between a group of Chicago filmmakers, the project will create media that contextualizes and humanizes issues such as standardized testing, charter schools, privatization, and the effects of school closings to promote an informed conversation about the past, present, and future of public education in Chicago, a city on the front lines of America’s education struggles. The transmedia project and feature documentary will look at how decisions are made and their consequences as they play out in our communities. The team includes Free Spirit Media, Kartemquin Films, Kindling Group, Media Process Group, Siskel/Jacobs Productions and freelancers Rachel Dickson and Melissa Sterne. Media partners include Catalyst Chicago, Chicago Sun-Times, and WTTW/Channel 11.

Al Jazeera America Announces Production of Documentary Series with Kartemquin Films on Realities of Low-Income Living

Kartemquin is proud to announce a collaboration with Al Jazeera America on Hard Earned, a six-part documentary series scheduled to air in early 2015. Production has already begun on the series, which will explore the lives of five American families striving to keep food on the table and their dignity intact despite the reality of high living expenses and low wages.
