Kartemquin Films remembers Linda Pedraza, a great supporter and fighter for women touched by hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. On January 6, Linda lost her courageous battle with the disease. We are grateful to carry Linda's message through her and her family's involvement in our documentary In the Family.
In the Family recently received a grant from the Michael Reese Health Trust of Chicago. We are most grateful for their support. In other news, this February Joanna Rudnick and Gordon Quinn plan to present excerpts from the film in progress at "Joining Forces Against Hereditary Cancer," the first annual conference on hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, presented by FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered). This spring, we plan to launch an interactive website about the documentary.
Kartemquin Films recently received a $7,500 grant from the Harry S. Black and Allon Fuller Fund for continued production on Terra Incognita. It is the first grant that Kartemquin has received from this New York institution and the funds will go toward finishing the film. The Black and Fuller Fund awards one-year grants to nonprofit organizations in New York and Chicago for projects involving health and physical disabilities.
This summer In the Family launched production by filming a support group for women who tested for the hereditary breast and ovarian cancer mutations. Filmmaker Joanna Rudnick, who participated in the support group, followed it up with a shoot with her family to explore their experience with testing. Currently, Joanna is working with genetic counselors to locate a woman and her family to follow through the testing process.
