Tim Horsburgh

Director of Communications and Distribution

Tim Horsburgh is Kartemquin’s Director of Communications and Distribution. Since 2009, he has driven marketing, audience engagement, public relations, and social media for Kartemquin and all their films. In March 2014 he began overseeing Kartemquin's distribution strategy. He is also responsible for assessing and managing potential new Kartemquin documentary projects.

He has led audience building campaigns for award-winning films including Life Itself, The Interrupters, Typeface, The Trials of Muhammad Ali, The Homestretch, Almost There, No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson, As Goes Janesville, A Good Man, Prisoner of Her Past, and more. For these films and Kartemquin as an organization he has overseen distribution strategies that have included the world's leading festivals; domestic and international theatrical releases, domestic and international broadcasts, and worldwide digital releases, and developed impact campaigns that have reached millions of viewers and organizations.

Between 2009-2014 he also managed Kartemquin's filmmaker development programs including the Internship, KTQ Labs, Diverse Voices in Docs, and the Rock the Doc socials, among other initiatives to enhance the Midwest independent production community.

Before joining Kartemquin, Tim worked in Chicago from 2006-2009 in a variety of freelance roles as a producer, journalist, festival programmer, production office manager, social media strategist, and researcher.

Tim was born in India, but raised in England. He holds a Masters in Humanities and Cultural Studies from the London Consortium (2005), and a BA in History from University College London (2003). He is currently a part-time faculty member for Northwestern University's MFA in Documentary Media.

He has spoken on documentary film marketing and distribution, media advocacy, crowdfunding, and social impact at festivals including Sheffield Doc/Fest, Hot Docs, AFI Docs, Big Sky Doc Fest, Palm Springs International Film Festival, the SCMS Annual Conference, the International Documentary Association's Getting Real conference, Midwest International Film Festival, Chicago Filmmakers, the Chicago Documentary Summit, Geneva Film Festival, and Cinema Chicago's CineYouth Festival. He has served as juror for the Hot Docs Forum, Chicago International Film Festival, Illinois Arts Council, and the Minneapolis-St.Paul International Film Festival.

Tim is a founding member of the Indie Caucus and was a founding member of the 2012 #PBSneedsindies campaign.
