Tim Horsburgh

Director of Film Strategy

Tim Horsburgh is Kartemquin’s Director of Film Strategy, leading the organization's development, production, and distribution of original documentaries through their collaborative production model; industry outreach, strategic initiatives, and brand-building; and serving as the point of contact for Kartemquin Producers and Associates.

Since joining Kartemquin in 2009, he has driven marketing, audience engagement, public relations, and social media for Kartemquin and all their films. In March 2014 he began overseeing Kartemquin's distribution strategy, and was also responsible for assessing and managing potential new Kartemquin documentary projects.

He has led marketing, distribution and impact campaigns for award-winning films including 2019 Academy Award nominee Minding the Gap, and 2018 Academy Award nominees Edith+Eddie and Abacus: Small Enough to Jail, and the ten-part series America to Me. His experience covers directing and implementing the festival, theatrical, broadcast, and digital releases of over 40 award-winning films, series, and shorts, and he has helped develop impact campaigns that have reached millions of viewers and organizations. Additional Projects include the Emmy Award-winning Life Itself, The Interrupters, The Trials of Muhammad Ali; and The Homestretch; and the nationally and internationally broadcast productions Eating up Easter; Cooked: Survival by Zip Code; Raising Bertie;No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson; Typeface; Unbroken Glass; In the Game; Almost There; As Goes Janesville; A Good Man; All the Queen’s Horses; and more.

Between 2009-2014 he also managed Kartemquin's filmmaker development programs including the Internship, KTQ Labs, Diverse Voices in Docs, and the Rock the Doc socials, among other initiatives to enhance the Midwest independent production community.

Tim was a founding member of the Indie Caucus and was a founding member of the 2012 #PBSneedsindies campaign.

Before joining Kartemquin, Tim worked in Chicago from 2006-2009 in a variety of freelance roles as a producer, journalist, festival programmer, production office manager, social media strategist, and researcher.

Tim was born in India, but raised in England. He holds a Masters in Humanities and Cultural Studies from the London Consortium (2005), and a BA in History from University College London (2003). He is has taught as a part-time faculty member for Northwestern University's MFA in Documentary Media and for Columbia College Chicago's department of Business and Entrepreneurship.

He has spoken on documentary film marketing and distribution, media advocacy, crowdfunding, and social impact at festivals including Sundance Film Festival (2019), IDA Getting Real (2018 and 2016), Visible Evidence XXV (2018), IFP Chicago (2018), True/False Film Festival (2018), Chicago International Film Festival (2018, 2017, 2016), Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference (2017), Hot Docs (2016 and 2013), Full Frame Documentary Film Festival (2015), Palm Springs International Film Festival (2015), Sheffield Doc/Fest (2015 and 2014), Big Sky Doc Fest (2015), Geneva Film Festival (2014), Cinema/Chicago's CineYouth Festival (2014).
