Represent, the debut feature from director Hillary Bachelder, produced by Anne Sobel and associate produced by Carina Nieto, was selected to participate in the 2018 Sheffield Doc/Fest's MeetMarket –– one of the world's largest documentary and factual markets.
Selected from over 550 submissions, the filmmakers of Represent will have the opportunity to meet with over 300 international funders, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents and exhibitors.
About the film:
The United States currently ranks 104th in the world for gender parity in parliamentary politics, sitting comfortably between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. At the current rate of growth, women cannot expect equal representation in Congress until the year 2117. But that may change.
Divisive campaign rhetoric and the early moves of President Trump’s administration have provoked an overwhelming response from women across the country. In 2017, organizations that train women for political leadership reported a participation increase in their programs of up to 1,000 percent over previous years.
Represent follows two parallel stories of women stepping up for the first time to run for local office across the Midwest: Myya Jones, a 22-year-old recent graduate running for Mayor of Detroit, and Bryn Bird, a produce farmer in rural Ohio fighting for progressive values as township trustee. Represent sets these deeply personal stories of triumph and tragedy against a backdrop of the current women’s movement for equal representation in our democracy.
