Carlos De Luna case back in the news

Fans of our Oscar-shortlisted 2008 documentary At The Death House Door will never forget the case of Carlos De Luna, the wrongly-executed man at the center of the film's study of the death penalty. The case is back in the news again this week thanks to Los Tacayos Carlos, a comprehensive new book and online report from Columbia Law School, which picks up where our film left off in arguing that De Luna was innocent.
 

KTQ Labs is SOLD OUT

We are pleased to report that tonight's inaugural KTQ Labs Spring Showcase at the Gene Siskel Film Center is now SOLD OUT!

KTQ Labs Spring Showcase is coming to the Siskel Center tomorrow, May 15th at 7 pm.  Four works-in-progress by Kartemquin filmmakers will be screened,  including The Trials of Muhammad Ali by Bill Siegel.

Producer Rachel Pikelny sat down recently to discuss the film's unexpected interview coup: Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrahkhan's first-ever on-camera interview about Muhammad Ali.

The documentary story of the day is also the political story of the day. A scene in Brad Lichtenstein and Nicole Docta’s As Goes Janesville has been making waves across the media since it was released Thursday evening, as part of a longer demo for the soon to be completed film.

Typeface premieres in New York City on May 14th

In its long-awaited New York City debut, Kartemquin’s Typeface will be screening on May 14th from 1 to 3 PM as a part of the Parsons New School of Design Festival 2012. The screening will be a followed by a panel discussion with director (and Kartemquin executive director) Justine Nagan, Repeat Press' Mike Dacey, Chris Piascik, and Nancy Laboz of Parcel. The Festival runs from May 1st through May 20th and features primarily cutting-edge student work in various media. Typeface examines the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, and the broader social context behind the advance of artistic technology.

Indies Celebrate PBS Programming Change

Thanks to the 1200+ fans and filmmakers who joined our cause to support independent documentary film programming, PBS announced yesterday it would move Independent Lens and POV to Monday night, PBS' highest-rated evening.

The long-awaited change would not have been possible without the groundswell of support from our fans and allies like PBS veteran Bill Moyers and the International Documentary Association.

“We really feel that we had an effect,” Gordon Quinn told the New York Times' Decoder media blog.

Happy Mondays! PBS announces new night for documentary strands

Kartemquin is delighted that PBS today announced a new regular spot on their schedule - Mondays at 10pm - for documentary strands Independent Lens and POV.

This move is the culmination of months of negotiation between PBS and the programs after they were moved away from their regular Tuesday night timeslots and subsequently lost a large amount of viewers. In response, Kartemquin and other independent documentary filmmakers mounted the PBS Needs Indies campaign to signal our concern over the fate of documentary programming on PBS.
