No Crossover screenings inspire open conversations about race
April 2, 2010
Steve James is traveling.
For the past month the Kartemquin director has been touring festivals across the country with his new film No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson, presenting screenings in Austin at SXSW, Cleveland, Silver Spring, MD., and the Virginia peninsula in which both James and Iverson grew up. He is now back in Chicago to appear on The Interview Show tonight and present the film at the Midwest Film Festival on April 6th (read about in Time Out and the Chicago Tribune), but will then be traveling again to screenings in Durham, NC for the Full Frame Film Festival and to Sarasota, FL., and participating in a live online chat with viewers directly after the ESPN world TV premiere on April 13th.
Why is Steve James so committed to discussing the film in front of an audience? Perhaps because one of the main themes that emerges from No Crossover is that Americans, and particularly the residents of Hampton, are still very reluctant to talk about race. By taking the film across the country, James is using his documentary to open up a dialogue on this sensitive subject. It is therefore a good measure of the films impact to read blog posts like this one, taken from the AFI SilverDocs screening last week, containing this quote:
"And there we were, a group of 100+, black and white and diverse in
countless other ways (but unified in our interest in a film and a
filmmaker) talking about race – REALLY talking about it – agreeing and
disagreeing, pushing on points, relenting, listening, and maybe even (at
least for a moment, at least partially) understanding."
If you would like to engage with this film, check upcoming screenings of No Crossover for a festival date near you, or sign-up for the live chat with Steve James.

April 1, 2010
"Typeface was born out of an interest in design and visual culture, a love of the Midwest and the desire to make a meaningful social-issue documentary that was also a work of art."
That's Kartemquin Executive Director Justine Nagan on her debut film Typeface, which screens at the Wisconsin Film Festival on April 18th. Read the rest of the article here.

Joanna Rudnick heralds "landmark victory" in ACLU/Myriad gene patenting case
March 30, 2010
In the wake of yesterday's historic court ruling against Myriad Genetics, Kartemquin's In the Family is featured in a special segment on today's All Things Considered on NPR (available to live stream here from 7pm ET). The film's director, Joanna Rudnick, has also been interviewed by the Chicago Tribune about the case, which she cited as a "landmark victory for all women and families with BRCA mutations, as well as a precedent-setting decision for the case against patenting forms of nature."
The ruling by the Southern District of New York was in favor of the plaintiffs, led by the ACLU, who challenged Myriad Genetics right to hold patents on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which are associated with breast and ovarian cancer. NPR states that "the ruling has far-reaching implications for the patenting of human genes," and the case has created a media storm.
Rudnick, who has a mutation in the BRCA1 gene, documented her own investigation into the ethics of Myriad's patents in In the Family, and has presented special screenings of the film in conjunction with the ACLU to raise awareness of the case. Click here to read a Huffington Post blog by Rudnick about the case, and watch a clip of In the Family in which she interviews Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Myriad, Dr. Mark Skolnick.
Judge rules in favor of ACLU in Myriad Genetic case
March 29, 2010
A U.S. District judge has ruled in favor of the ACLU in their lawsuit against Myriad Genetics today, stating that it's patents for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene-test “are directed to a law of nature and were therefore improperly granted.”
This is a great victory for all who were involved in Kartemquin's documentary In the Family, which documented filmmaker Joanna Rudnick's investigation of the patenting issue after her own discovery that she carried the BRCA gene.

In the Family screening reaches bilingual audience
March 25, 2010
Kartemquin's Emmy-nominated documentary In the Family screens in Chicago tomorrow at the Better Boys Foundation and is achieving our goal of reaching the new audiences who need to hear about the issues involved in the film by being featured in two local bilingual newspapers: Extra News and Lawndale Bilingual Newspaper. The screening was also featured in Bill Zwecker's column in the Chicago Sun-Times.
The free screening is Kartemquin's second collaboration with the Better Boys Foundation, who also worked with Kartemquin's Kelley Moseley on a number of events and hosted free outreach screening to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Hoop Dreams in 2009. Tommorow's free screening is preceded by a special reception and will be followed by a Q&A session with director Joanna Rudnick and panelists from the American Cancer Society, the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Taskforce and Sinai Urban Health Institute.
For public information about the screening, contact Kelley Moseley, BBF YouthLAB Co-Director, at 773-542-7335 or kelley.moseley@betterboys.org.
