Congratulations to Kartemquin Diversity Fellow Usama Alshaibi and his wife Kristie on the birth of their baby girl, named Muneera Cinema Alshaibi. Muneera was born August 30, 2011 at 6:31pm. Usama explains that, "the name Muneera means 'luminous or brilliant light'. So with the middle name Cinema her name means "brilliant light in motion."
Usama's first film for Kartemquin, American Arab, is currently in post-production, aiming for a 2012 release. The film looks at Usama's experiences as a Arab-American living in the US in the wake of 9/11 and the 'war on terror'. Find out more, see clips, and support the film here.
Usama will also be presenting clips from the film and participate in a panel discussion with Affnan Mohammed and Arab-American studies expert Dr. Louise Cainkar (Marquette University) at the 2011 Milwaukee Film Festival on September 26th. The event is part of the Milwaukee Film Festival's celebration of 45 years of Kartemquin Films.
