The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded a $75,000 development grant to Encounters with the Other, a new Kartemquin documentary being developed by Peabody Award-winning producer Maria Finitzo.

Encounters with the Other examines the indigenous Tsimane people of Bolivia as they transition from a traditional to modern way of life. Maria will use part of the grant to fund research and initial production in Bolivia in 2011. Maria is producing the film with Kartemquin artistic director Gordon Quinn and in collaboration with Northwestern University professors Mike Kennedy and Dr. Bill Leonard, the Chairman of the Department of Anthropology.
Maria is also currently producing In the Game for Kartemquin.
