Kartemquin’s Gordon Quinn met with youth members of the Fair Use Remix Institute yesterday to talk about fair use best practices in documentary. Kartemquin Board Member Pat Aufderheide joined the group via videoconference. Read more about their conversation.

Long time Kartemquin associate Judy Hoffman will be screening, and leading a discussion on, Godard’s 1962 film, Vivre Sa Vie at Facets on Sunday, July 20th at 10am.

The In the Family crew just returned from another busy trip to Washington DC. The group held a productive and thought-provoking Outreach Summit, met with Obama’s office to help get the word out about the recent passage of GINA, presented at the Genetic Alliance National Conference and screened the film to great audiences at two screenings at the E Street Cinemas. Kartemquin’s Justine Nagan just returned from presenting clips of Typeface at TYPECON, the national type conference sponsored by the Society of Typographic Aficionados. She received wonderful support for the project while there.

Kartemquin’s Steve James is at BritDoc this week with At the Death House Door and Paradise Regained a 3 minute short Steve did for Cinelan. At the Death House Door is being presented at BritDoc by SXSW as the “Best of Fest.”

A screening of Kartemquin’s classic Hoop Dreams is launching Doc New Zealand’s new “Doc Focus” community screening initiative on Tuesday night, July 29. Get the details

Last Wednesday, July 23rd, Kartemquin’s Leslie Simmer was a guest filmmaker at Kay Yang’s class of Odyssey Project graduates who are learning the fundamentals of documentary filmmaking at the University of Chicago.
The primary focus of the discussion was the ethics of documentary editing. Leslie is researching the possibility of developing a film on the Odyssey Project.
