Joanna Rudnick on a "the beginning of a new era" for high-risk women

In the Family director Joanna Rudnick is quoted in an Associated Press article today about a new study from the American Medical Association that indicates women at a high-risk of breast and ovarian cancer can benefit from ovary removal surgery. In the article, Joanna call the findings the "the beginning of a new era" for high-risk women, and reveals her own future plans to have ovary removal surgery at the age of 40 after having children. In the Family and Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz raising awareness of genetic testing for cancer

In the Family Director Joanna Rudnick received the 2010 FORCE 'Spirit of Empowerment Award' this past weekend at the 5th Annual Joining FORCEs Conference in Orlando, Florida. Here is a picture of Joanna Rudnick with Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz at the FORCE conference. Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz was the lead author on the EARLY ACT and remains an incredible support and advocate for all women facing hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. Joanna and In the Family are committed to working with Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz and FORCE on new campaigns to raise awareness and ensure that all women have access to genetic testing, including the Congresswoman's current fight to get the offices of Medicare and Medicaid to cover genetic counseling and testing. In the Family to present poster at Genetic Counselors Conference

A collaborative team from Kartemquin's In the Family, The Center for Medical Genetics at the NorthShore University HealthSystem, and The University of Chicago Hospitals will present a poster titled "Evaluating the use of film media to assist decision-making during BRCA genetic counseling" at the National Society of Genetic Counselors Adult Education Conference on October 15th 2010. Kartemquin documentaries Hoop Dreams and In the Family are featured in the book Documentary Media: History, Theory, Practice by Broderick Fox. Hoop Dreams is discussed at length in a chapter titled "Crafting Your Story" and In the Family is highly praised for its editing, animated sequences and complex use of sound design in a chapter titled "Audiovisualizing the Documentary." Joanna Rudnick heralds "landmark victory" in ACLU/Myriad gene patenting case

In the wake of yesterday's historic court ruling against Myriad Genetics, Kartemquin's In the Family is featured in a special segment on today's All Things Considered on NPR (available to live stream here from 7pm ET). The film's director, Joanna Rudnick, has also been interviewed by the Chicago Tribune about the case, which she cited as a "landmark victory for all women and families with BRCA mutations, as well as a precedent-setting decision for the case against patenting forms of nature." Judge rules in favor of ACLU in Myriad Genetic case

A U.S. District judge has ruled in favor of the ACLU in their lawsuit against Myriad Genetics today, stating that it's patents for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene-test “are directed to a law of nature and were therefore improperly granted.” This is a great victory for all who were involved in Kartemquin's documentary In the Family, which documented filmmaker Joanna Rudnick's investigation of the patenting issue after her own discovery that she carried the BRCA gene.
